Great article. I got to know so many things! Right to Repair is something I believe in too. First I try my hand at it and often giving it to the local electronics wala, he gives up too easily I think. And then I hate to throw it away. Or atleast without knowing where to dispose e-waste. Waste management is something that is eating me for some time now. Proper disposal of things and reusing/recycling best we can. Something I look forward to and want to pursue as a nation’s collective.
Well, while the right to repair puts most of the onus on the manufacturers to allow repair by design by either the consumer or the repairman. I personally think before throwing away, the consumer may want to try to repair himself or get it repaired. If he is not interested/knowledgeable/have time then, he could sell it at 60 to 80% of the cost to the students or people have the skills to do so. Otherwise, they can just sell it to the repairman who can use it for spare parts.
E-Waste management is a very complicated process due to toxic nature of disposed stuff. And recycling of E-waste is complicated and already in Pakistan people do it without any protective gear and inhaling toxic fumes.
The above approach to sell at a very low cost to the people who can repair is in my point of view the quickest way to deal with reducing e-waste. But feel free send your thoughts, disagreements, or any campaign you may start.
I have been following Louiss and his rants on Apple for long. One more important person to mention would be bunnie (https://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?p=4782). He is so cool!
I ll have to check. I dnt know louiss before. I came across him when i was looking through iphone tear down videos.
In general though, i have been buying lot of broken stuff from ebay in last years. Got a nintendo wii dirt cheap last year at 30 euros. The problem was a broken connector on the side.
Most things are so flimsy nowadays inside. And repairs can cost so much just on per hour labour.
